Why should I harden my home?

Understanding wildfire behavior

Key benefits of hardening your home

Key benefits of hardening your home

  • Heat and Flames: Wildfires can produce intense heat and flames that can ignite structures from a distance. Homes can catch fire from direct contact with flames or radiant heat.
  • Embers: The majority of homes destroyed in wildfires are ignited by flying embers, which can travel miles ahead of the fire. These embers can be pulled into vents by temperature and heat differentials and land on roofs, decks, and in gutters, potentially igniting flammable materials.

Key benefits of hardening your home

  • Increased Resilience: Hardening your home makes it more resistant to catching fire, which may protect not only your property but also your family and belongings.
  • Insurance Benefits: A hardened home may reduce your insurance premiums, as insurers recognize the reduced risk of damage.
  • Community Safety: By hardening your home, you contribute to your community's overall safety and resilience, which can help prevent the spread of wildfires and reduce the strain on firefighting resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

While you can have an inspection performed at any time, it's vital that you have it done well before fire season. This allows us to identify potential risks early on and help you make an informed decision about the actions taken to protect your property before it's too late.

Think of home hardening like a chain; it's only as strong as its weakest link. So it's best to perform as many actions as possible. You can do them over time, but start with the most crucial areas first, and we can help you determine what those are.

Every home and homeowner is unique, and it's crucial to understand all of the risks and benefits of any mitigation efforts. A pool is an excellent water resource and can be utilized in various ways. We can help you determine what is best for your home before you make a significant investment.

Structural wetting systems can be a beneficial mitigation effort, but it is imperative that many factors are considered before you make that decision. We can help you understand the limitations of your property's resources and ways to overcome them and adequately engineer a solution for you and your home.

Not all homeowners have a pool or spa in their yard. That's ok; we can help identify and recommend a solution that's right for your home. We can guide you through the process from above-ground tanks to subterranean cisterns.

Two references are being discussed at the moment. An actual private hydrant is when a homeowner pays the utility to install an additional hydrant in front of their home to be used in case of a fire. This increases water availability to firefighters and is typically unavailable for homeowner use unless a permitted meter is attached. The other is where larger diameter pipes and fittings are connected to a homeowner's water line. Using Bernoulli's law (paraphrased) based on the volume and pressure of the main water line and the diameter and length(volume) of the "hydrant line" will determine the effect. So, it is important to calculate correctly for the intended solution. Simply putting a fire hose on a home spigot is different from a hydrant. By adding a larger volume pipe to your main line, you can increase the volume of water but dramatically reduce the pressure. When turned on, you will have a surge of both but gradually reduce to a balanced flow rate.

One of the best parts of living in California is the access to nature, especially in our backyard. It's true, a big concern for fire risk is the vegetation surrounding our homes. But the good news is that there are a variety of ways we can help you determine the best plan of action. We can identify your existing plant species and their flammability and give directions to calculated foliage management.

It's essential to understand the risk to your specific home. Even being in the city adjacent to a WUI area carries potential risks. Embers can be carried miles in the proper conditions. Hardening your home regardless of wildfire can help protect your home from urban fire spread as well.
